Can you get a DUI while driving a vehicle other than a car?

In May of 2018, a was charged with a DUI while operating his golf cart at a campsite in Delaware. The man in question allegedly lost control of the cart, injuring a passenger in the cart in the process. He was then charged with a DUI after it was found he was intoxicated.

With this in mind, it’s important to know the laws in Pittsburgh regarding DUIs and the different ways you can be charged. DUIs are not restricted to just automobile operation.

How can I be charged with a DUI?

First, it’s important to note that you can be charged with a DUI in Pittsburgh in two different ways.

The first is most obvious. If you are found driving with a BAC of over the legal limit of .08, you can get a DUI.

However, if your BAC is less than .08 there is still a possibility you could receive a DUI. If the arresting officer determines your driving was reckless or dangerous enough due to intoxication, you can still get a DUI.

What other ways can you be charged with a DUI?

There are many modes of transportation where you or a loved one can be subject to getting a DUI. The list includes:

  • Motorcycles
  • Boats
  • Bikes
  • Wheelchairs
  • Riding lawnmowers
  • Golf carts
  • Zambonis
  • Segways

Surprisingly, Pennsylvania does not adhere to the tradition of issuing DUIs to people riding horses while intoxicated. A man was once charged with this, but the court ultimately deemed this (old) law, unconstitutional in Pennsylvania.

DUI laws are mostly restricted to motorized vehicles with wheels. So be sure your loved one takes caution the next time they get behind any sort of wheel.
